Lawyers representing Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah in her defamation suit against Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos, are claiming that the Umno man is avoiding them from being served with court papers.

They are now looking for an alternative way to serve the papers, including placing advertisements in newspapers.

“We have sent a letter to him. We want to meet him on Wednesday,” said Maria’s lawyer, N Surendran.

Surendran pointed out that the defendant (Jamal) always appeared in public to make statements but was now suddenly not reachable.

“If we still cannot serve the papers, we may apply for substituted service by way of advertisements in the newspapers,” he said.

Maria, he said, wants to prove that Bersih was not influenced by a terrorist group, adding that the allegation by Jamal was a lie.

The court has fixed November 10 to ascertain if Jamal had been served with the papers.

Maria sued Jamal on October 7 after the Umno Sungai Besar division chief, alleged that Bersih was an agent of the Islamic State (IS) group.

He made the allegation during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and, the second time, outside the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman where he asked for action to be taken against her.

In a letter of demand on October 4, Maria demanded that Jamal apologise but the Red Shirts leader refused and instead flushed the document down a toilet.
