KUALA LUMPUR: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s defamation suit against Umno leader Jamal Yunos will be heard next year for four days from June 25, lawyer S N Nair said.
“We asked for an early date but the trial judge could not accommodate the request as the court diary has been filled with other cases,” said Nair who is appearing for Kok.
The case will be heard before judicial commissioner Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
Kok, who is also DAP national vice-chairman, filed the suit in April after Jamal claimed she had abused the money under the Yayasan Warisan Selangor (Yawas).
She claimed that Jamal’s statements had tarnished her reputation as a senior politician in the DAP and painted her as a corrupt person.
She is also seeking damages and an injunction to stop the Red Shirts leader and his agents from publicising further defamatory statements against her.
MACC officers had then raided her office, requesting for the original documents for Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE), which falls under the Yawas fund.
The raid is believed have been based on a series of police reports made by Jamal against her and her DAP colleagues.
In another matter, the High Court has deferred fixing a date to hear the striking out application by Najib Razak, the government and 1MDB over a suit to stop them from paying a sum of US$1.2 billion to Abu Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).
Lawyer Mohamed Hanif Khatri Abdulla said justice Hue Siew Kheng, who has been assigned to hear the case, is on medical leave.
He said deputy registrar Norliana Ismail has fixed another case management on Oct 26.
On July 11, 10 opposition youth members filed the class action suit as they were unhappy with the Malaysian government’s decision following a settlement reached between IPIC and 1MDB before the International Court of Arbitration in London.
The plaintiffs are claiming the settlement is invlaid and want to compel Najib, the government and 1MDB to provide detailed accounts of all money paid to IPIC and its subsidiary, Aabar Investment PJS.
After the suit was filed, it was reported that 1MDB paid US$603 million it owed to IPIC, a day before its Aug 31 deadline.
The sovereign wealth fund is due to pay IPIC another US$603 million by Dec 31 this year.-FMT NEWS-
