Kit Siang takes issue with Annuar Musa who declared that the RM2.6 billion donation deposited in Prime Minister Najib's personal banking account was “not a big sum” to face one General Election.
KUALA LUMPUR: Suspended Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang wants the new Umno Information Chief, Annuar Musa, to share with the ordinary people who do not have the benefit of being ”graduates” of the University of Umno what would be “a big sum” to face one General Election in Malaysia: RM50 billion, RM100 billion or RM200 billion . . .
Lim, who is also DAP Parliamentary Leader, was taking issue with Annuar who declared that the RM2.6 billion donation deposited in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal banking account was “not a big sum” to face one General Election. “Malaysia’s election laws stipulate that the maximum expenditure legally permissible for a parliamentary candidate is RM200,000 while the maximum legal expenditure for a State Assembly candidate is RM100,000.”
With 222 Parliamentary seats and 505 State Assembly seats contested in the 13th General Elections, added Lim, this meant that the maximum election expenditures permitted by Malaysian election laws came to RM44.4 million for all Umno/Barisan Nasional’s (BN) 222 Parliamentary candidates and RM50.5 million for the 505 Umno/BN State Assembly candidates, or a total of RM94.9 million, just short of RM100 million.
The RM2.6 billion “donation” to Najib was 26 times more than the legally permissible election expenditures for all the 222 Parliamentary and 505 State Assembly candidates from Umno/BN, pointed out the DAP veteran. “This was clearly only ‘chicken-feed’ for fighting one General Election as far as the new Umno Information Chief was concerned.”
Annuar also exhibited another attribute which must be inculcated in University of Umno “graduates”,not to believe in what top government officials, like the Attorney-General, say publicly, like Najib having returned RM2.03 billion to the “donor”, noted Lim.
“Annuar regards the Attorney-General (AG) Mohamad Apandi Ali’s claim that Najib had returned RM2.03 billion in August 2013 as nothing but a ‘tall tale’ as no documents have been produced to verify it.”
Annuar would otherwise not have focused on RM2.6 billion as “not a big sum” to fight one General Election, said Lim.
Even if RM2.03 billion had been returned to the mysterious “donor”, continued Lim, some RM570 million would have remained , six times more than the legally maximum expenditure of RM94.9 million for all parliamentary and state assembly candidates of Umno/BN in one General Election.
If it was any consolation to Annuar, said Lim, not only the overwhelming majority of Malaysians, but the world, would agree with him that without evidence, Apandi Ali’s story that RM2.03 billion had been returned by Najib to the mysterious “donor” was nothing but a fairy tale.
