The "Friends of Najib Club", known as N87, has pledged to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's leadership.
N87 chairman Datuk Seri Dr Suleiman Mohamed said although they had retired from the world of politics, the members of the club remained eager to fight with the party, and were willing to help Barisan Nasional (BN) remain strong.
"Each of us has our own influence as old timers, and if they (the people) are overwhelmed by outstanding issues, they should listen to us.
"We will move and help in any way we can," he told reporters after the club's meeting in conjunction with the 40th anniversary celebration of Najib's involvement in politics at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.
Suleiman, a former deputy minister of information, said the N87 Club which was formed after the 13th general election, comprised former Youth division chiefs from when Najib was Umno Youth chief.
He said the club had carried out a number of programmes and efforts to reach out to voters, to help the party face the next general election.
He said today's inaugural meeting which brought together some 500 members, was the "soft launch" of the club, with its full launch expected to be officiated by Najib on April 12.
Meanwhile, Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abdul Samad, who had known Najib for over 40 years, said the prime minister was a leader who was a good listener and patient in facing challenges and political twists.
"We can see today, he (Najib) has been tested greatly, with relentless persecution by irresponsible groups.
"But he remains committed to his main job of looking after the welfare of the people of this country," said Abdul Halim, who was a senior political secretary to Najib for 20 years.
Former Marang MP Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Bakar said Najib was someone who highly valued the spirit of friendship.
Recalling his personal experience with Najib, he said, "During the 1986 election, I managed to beat Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS president) for the Marang parliamentary seat, and Najib personally came down to Marang to congratulate me, and called me 'Giant Killer'."
Former Kepala Batas Umno Youth chief Hasni Yasin said when Najib was Umno Youth chief, he often reminded Umno Youth members to remain committed and sincere in prioritising the interests of the people.
"He was nurtured so well with the characteristics of a prime minister, by his father the late Tun Razak Hussein (Malaysia's second prime minister)," he said. – Bernama, February 20, 2016.
