Former PM Mahathir Mohamad says he is willing to be incarcerated over his criticism of the government.
PUTRAJAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he is willing to die in jail should his criticism against the government end with him being incarcerated.
“If you stick your neck out, it will be chopped.
“If that’s how my life ends, in jail, then so be it, maybe I’ll share a cell with Anwar Ibrahim,” he quipped during a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, alluding to his former protege, who is serving a five-year sentence in Sungai Buloh prison for sodomising his former aide.
He was speaking to reporters after being questioned by the police over a blog posting on Attorney-General Apandi Ali.
On a separate issue, Mahathir said he did not feel outgoing Bank Negara Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz would be able to hand over a clean slate to her successor by bringing a close to the probe on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) before she leaves office.
This, he said was because the controversies surrounding 1MDB could not be resolved anytime soon.
“I think it will be very difficult to resolve the issue, but I understand her desire to hand over a clean slate.”
Mahathir had earlier this month attacked Apandi over his decision not to charge Prime Minister Najib Razak over the twin scandals of the RM2.6 billion donation, and the RM42 million from SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary, deposited into Najib’s personal bank accounts.
In his blog, Mahathir claimed this was because Apandi was indebted to Najib, an allegation Umno Information Chief Annuar Musa declared was seditious in nature.
