Deputy Home Minister says legalising marijuana use will only worsen drug abuse and says even the United States cannot handle the problem of addiction.
KUALA LUMPUR: Any attempts to legalise marijuana will not work in the country, said Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Commenting on the proposal by Youth Parliament member Muhamad Ridhwan Mohd Rosli to legalise weed, Nur Jazlan said Malaysia would not go down the same path as the United States of America in legalising weed.
“Is he kidding me? The USA cannot handle drug abuse issues. That’s why they are now focusing on legalising all these drugs.
“Drugs are available here in Malaysia but we cannot legalise them even though they are less potent drugs because of the social impact.
Look at USA as an example,” he told reporters at the Joint Patrol Walkabout by the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) at the Pavilion KL shopping complex here today.

Nur Jazlan also said Malaysians were of a different fibre from the Americans, who were more liberal.
“You know, because they are liberal, they legalise the use of drugs.
“Now that they cannot control drugs, they are thinking about legalising more and more drugs, but it doesn’t solve the problem.”
Ridhwan, who heads the Youth Parliament’s spirituality and religious committee, claimed that many youths had suggested to him that the government should legalise ganja.
This was especially so as Malaysia had recently signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement along with 11 other nations, some of which have legalised the use of the drug.
Ridhwan went on to explain that many youths here do not even see marijuana, also known as weed or ganja, as a drug.
However, the Selangor youth parliamentarian said he was not advocating the call to legalise the drug, but only wanted the authorities to regulate its usage.
