British Prime Minister David Cameron should not have
announced his resignation at a time when the country needs his leadership the
most.
This was stated by Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local
Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan who was of the opinion that it was too
early for Cameron to make the decision.
“I understand the sentiments of the British may be such, but
what shocked us is the prime minister’s resignation at a time when Britain
needs his leadership.
“I think it is too early for him to step down.
“He should do it when things are more stable,” said the Umno
Supreme Council member after a meeting at the party’s headquarters here this
evening.
Cameron, in a surprise announcement today, said he will
resign by October.
This came following the country’s decision to leave the
European Union after a referendum showed 51.7% of its people voted for the
country to exit the bloc.
While many have expressed concern over the exit, which was
said to possibly affect Malaysia’s economy, Umno Supreme Council member Johari
Abdul Ghani believed the impact would not be as severe as predicted.
“There would be short-term impact. The investments will go
down but it will be temporary.
”The market will recover after the market accepts the
decision and so will the currency rates.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also finance
minister, said he did not expect a major impact on the Malaysian economy.
“I am confident that we will be able to weather this period
of uncertainty. The government will also continue to strengthen the economy and
further our fiscal reforms.
“But our economic exposure to the UK is limited as it is not
among Malaysia’s top 10 trading partners and only accounts for about 1% of our
total trade.”
