Barely a week after The Voice singer Christina Grimmie, 23,
died after she was shot at a concert venue in Orlando, another alumni has met a
similar fate with a bullet.
Alejandro Jano Fuentes, a contestant on the Mexican version
of the popular singing competition show, was shot three times in the head
outside a performing arts centre in Chicago on Thursday.
Fuentes, 45, had been out celebrating his birthday with
friends when he was reportedly ordered out of his vehcle by an armed man at
around 10.15pm and was then shot.
Critically injured, Fuentes was taken to Mount Sinai
Hospital and was pronounced dead there almost 40 hours later – at 2:07pm
yesterday, reported the Chicago Tribune.
Police initially said the man had been pronounced dead soon
after the shooting, but he was placed on life support so relatives could arrive
from Mexico, according to family and friends.
Fuentes gained fame in his native Mexico after participating
in the Mexican version of "The Voice" in 2011. He opened a performing
arts studio in Brighton Park called Tras Bambalinas, Spanish for Backstage,
which taught young people singing, dancing, acting and modeling. He was shot on
the same block as the studio, which also served as his home, according to
records.
Police had yet to identify any suspects and are reportedly
investigating the shooting as the result of a botched robbery or carjacking.
