Former Chief Justice Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad has alleged
that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s support of opposition parties DAP and Amanah in
the recent by-elections were “detrimental to Malays”.
He added that the former prime minister could try and oust
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from within Umno, but should steer clear
of lobbying for support within the Pakatan Harapan opposition alliance as the
chances of Malays retaining power once they have lost it is “very slim,” Utusan
Malaysia reported today.
“I do not mind if he campaigns among Umno members to force
Najib to resign as party president.
“I also do not mind if he campaigns for a vote of
no-confidence against Najib, to force him to resign as prime minister. But I do
not agree with him working with DAP and Amanah,” Abdul Hamid was quoted saying.
The retired top judge said Dr Mahathir should take heed from
the voters in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections who elected Barisan
Nasional (BN) with bigger majorities despite the 91-year-old’s campaign effort
for the opposition.
Dr Mahathir, who has been a vocal critic of the Najib
administration since last year, upped his campaign in March by leading a motley
group of politicians from both sides of the political divide and civil society
leaders to call for Najib’s resignation.
During the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, he
campaigned for the first time against BN, the coalition he once led for 22
years until his retirement from public office in 2003.
However, BN won both seats with a majority of 9,191 votes
(Sungai Besar) and 6,969 votes (Kuala Kangsar).
