A stop-work order has been issued after part of the roof
structure at the National Velodrome in Nilai collapsed during a storm last
Saturday.
This has left the Malaysian National Cycling Federation
(MNCF) anxiously hoping that there would not be any further delays in view of
the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
This is the third time that work on the Class I velodrome
has been delayed since March.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Youth and Sports Ministry Khairy Jamaluddin said that the
forensic unit of the Works Ministry is looking into the cause of the collapse.
The government has allocated RM80mil under the 2013 Budget
to build the nation’s first indoor velodrome and the track cycling events for
the KL SEA Games will be held there in August next year.
MNCF vice-president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill hoped that the
project would not be delayed any further.
“The site has been closed as there can be no work until the
investigation is completed. From what the Sports Minister said, there will be a
delay of one month or more.
“Construction work was supposed to be ready by this month,
but pushed back to December. We hope the project can be ready before the 2017
SEA Games,” said Amarjit, who also hopes that the authorities will consider
using the Velodrome Rakyat in Ipoh as a back-up plan if the Nilai velodrome can
not be completed in time.
