PKR’s Rafizi Ramli today encouraged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin
and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to participate in the opposition’s reformation
agenda, saying the sacked Umno duo should look beyond the campaign to unseat
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The Pandan MP pointed out that with Muhyiddin and Mukhriz
now gone, there are no avenues left within Umno to remove Najib ahead of the
federal polls expected in two years.
“Therefore, I urge Tan Sri Muhyiddin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz
to look at objectives bigger than the goal to remove Najib.
“I am confident that if they are ready to join the movement
seeking to reform the entire system by changing it, they can bring significant
influence to the effort to defeat Najib in the 14th general election,” Rafizi said
in a message on a WhatsApp media chat group.
The PKR secretary-general also said the Umno supreme
council’s decision to sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz came as no surprise, as even
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had suffered the same fate years ago when he was removed
as deputy president.
He labelled Umno a “damaged” political entity, claiming that
power and money politics trumps all else in the ruling party.
The lawmaker also that the public will continue to observe
every step taken by Umno and its president, adding that the Sungai Besar and
Kuala Kangsar by-election results were not reflective of the overall support
from Malaysians towards Najib’s leadership.
Yesterday, Najib announced the party supreme council’s
decision to sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz, citing the duo’s breach of party
discipline in their involvement with the opposition.
He also announced that former vice-president Datuk Seri
Shafie Apdal has been suspended pending a final decision on by the party’s
disciplinary board.
Following a suggestion from Umno Youth, Najib added that
Putrajaya will no longer fund Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Perdana Peace
Foundation, which he said has been used as a base to plot against government.
Mukhriz and Muhyiddin are both part of a campaign to unseat
Najib headed by Dr Mahathir.
