KUALA LUMPUR: Ousted Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been invited by a youth group to attend this weekend’s Bersih rally at Dataran Merdeka.
Gerakan Anak Muda Harapan Baru (GAMHB) leader Sani Hamzan said his organisation believed that Muhyiddin, after being sacked from the Cabinet, would want to fight for a better Malaysia alongside other citizens.
“We are sure that Tan Sri would feel that this country needs saving,” he said at a media conference after sending an invitation letter to Muhyiddin’s house at Damansara Heights today. The conference was held outside the house.
Bersih is demanding free and fair elections, a transparent government, the right to demonstrate, the strengthening of parliamentary democracy and the rescue of the national economy.
Sani said the public was in great need of a leader who would step up and fight for the future of the country, which, he noted, was facing economic and political instability,
” Tan Sri is a brave leader with integrity,” he said. “This is why the public is waiting for him to come down to the rally and join politicians from other political parties, NGOs and the rakyat.”
Sani disclosed that GAMHB contacted a Muhyiddin aide last week to tell him of the impending invitation.
“We are aware that he is not in Malaysia at the moment,” he said, “but we hope that someone will pass the news to him that there are organisations who want to invite him to walk together with the rakyat this weekend.
“Our communication with his officer was through SMS. So we don’t know what his reaction was, but from the way he replied to our SMS, it seems positive.”
Muhyiddin was sacked from the Cabinet on July 28, two days after he made a remark on the controversial 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and urged Prime Minister Najib Razak to answer all allegations against him.
