PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) has asked Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to show proof that the Arabian man he met has huge sums of money to give away.
"The new Deputy Prime Minister says he has seen the Arab who gave the money. Then let him give proof that this Arab has huge sums of money to give away to Malaysia and many other countries.
"Which countries? What is the source of this money? What business does he do? What is the name of the bank he uses? Show his account in the bank, the cheques he issued, particularly the US$700mill. The recipient bank should be holding these cheques," said Dr Mahathir in his latest post on his blog at chedet.cc on Wednesday.
On Sunday, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister and Umno vice-president, said he had met the wealthy Arab family who had donated the US$700mil that was channelled into party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's personal account.
Dr Mahathir said all the information from Dr Ahmad Zahid could have been verified by the special task force investigating 1MDB, which has since been disbanded.
"Now the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) is said to be still investigating the RM2.6bil. It is an emasculated MACC. If Najib is serious about investigating his RM2.6bil in Ambank, he should reconstitute the original task force. A new task force filled with his people has no credibility," he said.
The special task force investigating 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) was disbanded soon after Tan Sri Apandi Ali took over as Attorney-General from Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail early August.
The Attorney-General's Chambers in a statement Tuesday, however, clarified that the National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team (NRRET) was not new and merely a rebranding of a Special Task Force that has been in existence since 2011.
It also clarified that the NRRET would not in any way be involved in investigating 1MDB or its related companies.
The MACC is not part of the NRRET.
Dr Mahathir also said Najib and his supporters should stop trying to convince Malaysians that the money in his private account was a donation.
"The public has a right to know because the public does not believe that the RM2.6bil was a gift personally to the Prime Minister of Malaysia for him to win elections.
"Malaysians would not like to believe their candidate for the highest office in the country is a nominee of some person from another country. What will be his obligation to his supporters - Will he serve Malaysians or some foreign country?" asked Dr Mahathir.
