KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29, 2016:
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been lauded in what has been described as his “courageous stand against Islamist extremists” in the light of the RM2.8 billion donation that was reportedly deposited into his account to combat religious extremism.
According to the United Kingdom daily The Telegraph, this was why the Saudi Arabian government had made the donation to help Najib win the previous general election.
This was part of an apparent secret war the Saudi government had waged on terrorist groups, while funding moderate Muslim countries and leaders to help tackle the problem.
“It is not unusual for Saudi Arabia to make donations like this.
“It happens all the time to help moderate Muslim governments to remain in power so that they can provide regional security to tackle the extremist threat.” the daily quoted a source close to the Saudi government as saying.
Earlier this week Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in relation to the case as it was alleged to have involved elements of graft.
The daily reported that the initiative to fund moderate Muslim leaders, such as Najib, could prove vital in curbing the growth of Islamist-inspired terrorism.
This, the report added, was happening time when Islamic State (IS) militants were using the millions of dollars it had seized from looted Arab banks and its lucrative oil-smuggling operations to fund the growth of extreme Islamic ideology.
