The attorney-general’s decision to clear Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of wrongdoing today will do little to solve Najib’s “political problems”, think tank Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) said.
Instead, Ideas chief executive Wan Saiful Wan Jan said it is a “no win situation” for the Umno president.
“In terms of public perception, this is a no-win situation for Najib. Despite the AG’s decision, public perception will not be on the PM’s side.
“In fact, many people would say this is an expected decision and they never expected the AG to make any other decision anyway.
“This is a case that has many political ramifications so a legal solution is unlikely to be the end,” Wan Saiful (photo) said in a statement.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali today announced Najib will not be charged over the RM2.6 billion found in his bank account or the RM42 million channelled to the PM from state-owned SRC International.
Apandi said the RM2.6 billion came from the Saudi royal family and Najib had no knowledge that the RM42 million came from SRC International.
The AG said Najib thought the RM42 million was part of the Saudi donation.
Najib also returned RM2.03 billion to the Saudi family, Apandi said.
He added that there were no elements of corruption found.
