PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Umno rebels seeking to oust his son Mukhriz as the Kedah menteri besar did not have a good reputation to begin with and could not themselves unite the state.
The former prime minister, the News Straits Times reported, told a press conference after opening the Global Doctors Medical Clinic, that the rebels who wanted to topple Mukhriz were the very ones who lost in the 2008 general election, which subsequently saw Kedah fall to the Opposition.
“For the first time, Kedah Umno lost (in 2008),” he was quoted by the English daily as saying.
The longest serving prime minister also said a change of menteri besar would have consequences.
“I am not saying it should not be allowed. What I am saying is there will be consequences,” Dr Mahathir said.
Acknowledging that there was nothing permanent in politics, he added, “We have friends, we have enemies. Friends can behave like enemies, enemies can behave like friends.”
Last week, Umno divisional chiefs led by deputy minister Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah claimed they had lost confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership and pleaded with Prime Minister and Umno President Najib Razak to have him replaced.
