The piece of plane wreckage found on the shore of Besut in Terengganu is not from MH370, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said a team comprising personnel from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), the ministry and Malaysia Airlines had examined the wreckage in order to determine its origins.
"The assessment found that the debris does not match those of a Boeing 777, thus confirming that the debris is not from MH370," he said in a statement today.
He also extended his appreciation to the relevant authorities for facilitating the identification process.
"We remain committed to the ongoing search for MH370, and will continue to keep the next-of-kin and public updated on any developments," he said.
The discovery of an object believed to be a part of an aircraft at the Beting Lintang beach in Besut on Wednesday had led to speculation that it might be linked to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that disappeared almost two years ago.
Flight MH370 with 239 passengers and crew on board, vanished from the radar on March 8, 2014 as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
To date, only a flaperon (part of the wing) of the plane was found washed ashore on the Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
The search for the missing plane is still ongoing in the southern Indian Ocean.
Flight data recovery indicated the plane made an air turnback and went missing somewhere in the southern Indian ocean. – Bernama, January 29, 2016.
