PAS: We must take over Penang to 'save Malays'
The only way to save the Malays in Penang is for PAS to form
the state government, a Penang PAS delegate suggested today.
At the PAS Youth wing muktamar today, Mohd Hafis Alias said
for PAS to do that, it needed to put in greater effort and win more state seats
in the next election. In the last election, PAS won only one state seat,
Permatang Pasir.
Giving land ownership to Malays in the state as one reason
for the need to “save the Malays”, he also called for a new law to protect
Malay Reserve land.
“The Malay Reservation Enactment 1933 in Penang has not been
properly enforced all these years and this meant that anyone, including
outsiders could buy land in the state,” Hafis said.
He added that this was despite the enactment stipulating
that Malay Reserve land cannot be disposed by any means to a non-Malay.
“Selling land to outsiders is akin to selling the country,”
Hafiz said.
In emphasising the need for the new law, Hafiz said that
Malays made up 43 per cent of the population in the state, yet only owned 20
per cent of land in Penang.
Furthermore, he added that some Malays in the state had not
realised that the compensation they received for the land they had sold did not
commensurate with the actual value of the land.
