Parti Amanah Negara has nominated physics professor Ahmad Termizi Ramli as its by-election candidate in Kuala Kangsar where Umno and PAS are also likely contesting in an unavoidable 3 corner fight.

Amanah president Mohamed Sabu confidently announced Termizi's candidacy in the presence of Pakatan Harapan leaders in Kuala Kangsar last night.

In accepting his nomination, Termizi described his candidacy as a heavy responsibility particularly as the by-election comes amid the 1MDB scandal.

"It is a turning point for the country... it is whether we choose to create history to save the country or condemn it," he said, lamenting that the country's international reputation is in shambles.

Mohamad later urged support for Termizi in the upcoming by-election.

Among the leaders present were PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Harapan general secretary Saifuddin Abdullah.

Termizi, 61, hails from Kampung Suak Petai in Manong, Kuala Kangsar.

He was a physics professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia before retirement.

Termizi obtained his degree in physics from University of Leeds, UK in 1975 and subsequently a masters in Radiological Health and Safety from the University of Salford, UK in 1980.

He also obtained his doctorate in medical physics as well as a diploma in ionisation physics from the University of Swansea, UK.

Termizi is the Kuala Kangsar Amanah deputy chief as well as a member of the Perak Amanah political bureau and a member of the Amanah national committee.

He was also the central committee member of Ikram and its political bureau secretary.

The physics professor is set to take on BN's Mastura Mohd Yazid, who is the widow of the late incumbent Kuala Kangsar MP, and PAS' Najihatussalehah Ahmad, who is a medical doctor.

Nomination day is set for June 5 while polling day will take place on June 18.
