KUALA LUMPUR: A cendol sellor and his assistant were among seven people arrested by police since Friday on suspicion of being militants of the Islamic State terrorist network.
The Inspector-General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar, said the seven, aged between 26 and 50, were arrested in separate raids in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Kedah, Pahang and Selangor.
The cendol seller, aged 50, and his assistant, who is from Terengganu, were arrested in Kedah, a police statement said, according to Star Online.
The cendol seller was said to be responsible for acquiring funds to cover expenses for those intending to join the IS network. The statement said the money is also to fund attacks in Malaysia.
A hotel assistant manager in Nusajaya and a factory store caretaker were arrested in Johor.
Khalid said the seven were planning attacks on strategic locations in the country.
One of them had received orders from known militant Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, while another took orders from Bahrom Naim, leader of the Indonesian Katibah Nusantara who ordered a recent suicide bombing attack in Jakarta.
A security guard and two others were detained in Gombak (Selangor), Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.
Police have seized were 30 bullets of different calibres, books on jihad (Islamic holy war), IS flags and a propaganda video.
