GEORGE TOWN: A high-powered explosion from coconut-shaped fireworks caused a fire in a terrace house and shattered windows of nearby houses in Seberang Jaya on Friday night.
Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanaf said it was believed the explosion was linked to a debt due to a loan shark.
“Police have identified two local men aged in their 20’s suspected of being involved in the incident and one of them is a loan shark,” he said.
Two persons on a motorcycle hurled the firecrackers at about 3 am.
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Rusli Mohd Noor said the firecracker caused the car shed of the terrace house to collapse. There were no casualties. He said the house had also been splashed with yellow paint.
The explosion started a small fire and also shattered the windows of three nearby houses in Lorong Sembilang 3, Taman Sembilang, in Seberang Jaya, Butterworth.
Police have appealed for more information about the attack.— BERNAMA
