The police today interviewed former Premier Dr Mahathir
Mohamad in connection with his statement that the King and the Rulers were
under “house arrest” over the Citizens’ Declaration campaign.
According to his lawyer, Ahmad Bazlan Che Kasim, a majority
of the questions revolved around the Citizens’ Declaration, which aims to
topple Najib Razak as the prime minister.
The elderly statesman, was interrogated for 30
minutes and had answered all the 37 questions, added the lawyer.
“Today’s investigation went well. This marks the third time
Tun Mahathir has been investigated by the police,” he told reporters outside
the Yayasan Al Bukhary Foundation building today.
Mahathir is being investigated under Section 500 of the
Penal Code for criminal defamation. If convicted, he can be jailed up to two
years, or a fine, or both, if convicted.
Last month, Mahathir claimed he had yet to secure an
audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah to present
the 1.2 million signatures of those in support of the Citizens’ Declaration and
believed the King and the Rulers were under house arrest.
This led to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission adviser
Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim lodging a report against Mahathir over the
“false and mischievous” allegations.
Prior to being called up by the police today,
Malaysia’s longest-serving PM was also investigated over a blog posting about
the Attorney-General and for urging the Rulers to remove Najib as the country’s
number one.
