Having people “jump parties” in order to change governments is not the right thing to do, said Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong (pic).

Mah was commenting on a report quoting Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as saying in Muar Friday that the Opposition was gunning to take over the state governments of Perak and Terengganu via crossovers.

“To me, I think that it is not right trying to entice people to come over (jump parties). The election is near, so wait and let the people decide,” said Mah at the 45th Gerakan National Delegates Conference at Menara PGRM, Pudu on Saturday.

“The people have already decided on the governments for Perak and Terengganu. You should not use crossovers just to change governments. This is the problem of too much politicking,” he said.

“Let the [state] governments continue, and if you want to do any changes [to the governments], wait until the next election. Not now,” he said.

Mah added that he did not wish to speculate on how Dr Mahathir planned to cross over.

“This is a culture that we do not want,” he said.

Mahathir, who is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) chairman, said that these states only needed two assemblymen from each state to crossover.

Therefore, Pribumi did do not need to wait for GE14 to win more states nationwide, said the former prime minister of 22 years.

He was referring to Jorak assemblyman Datuk Dr Shahruddin Salleh’s crossover from Umno to Pribumi that resulted in Johor Barisan losing its two-thirds majority in the state government.

The Gerakan conference takes place over this weekend.
