Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin has hit out at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his assertion that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim are disrupting racial harmony.
Najib said this in his Oct 13 speech, an audio recording of which was uploaded to his official blog, though without naming the duo directly.
"Najib's accusation that the Malays are divided because of Mahathir and Anwar are fabricated stories to frighten the Malays into not voting for another party, other than Umno, which is damaged beyond repair," said Muhyiddin in a statement today.
Najib's statement, said Muhyiddin, is nothing more than wild, baseless speculation. not to mention hypocritical.
The ex-DPM said that they oppose Najib because he is letting groups like the red shirts to rampage about about as a means to ensure he stays in power.
Muhyiddin pointed out that until today, Najib has failed to condemn the red shirts.
"If Najib truly cares about problems with racial harmony in Malaysia, he should have ordered (red shirt chief) Jamal Yunos and the red shirts to stop their provocation and assault on Bersih convoy participants who only want a fair and transparent electoral system.
Muhyiddin said that the red shirts have displayed a tendency to act provocatively and using racial undertones in their many encounters with supporters of electoral reform group Bersih.
The Pagoh MP hope that the negative comments piled by Najib unto Mahathir and Anwar are not a political ploy to justify use of the newly-minted National Security Council Act which he believe is designed to silence political dissent.
"The people know and are aware who is actually holding on to the fragile twigs of racial politics just to stay in power. Najib, the people are watching your every move and your time is running out," Muhyidin said.
