Comparing the results from the last general election (GE13) against the proposed redelineation by the Election Commission (EC), a DAP lawmaker has found clear evidence that the proposal will give Barisan Nasional (BN) a strong chance of regaining Selangor.
Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming said this at a forum on the redelineation proposal by the EC yesterday, adding that the voter balance could shift in 16 Selangor state seats, Malay Mail Online (MMO) reported.
“The redelineation proposal by the EC is clearly for BN’s advantage and in total, 16 state seats will be affected.
“But this is assuming the voting patterns remain the same as in 2013, and there are straight fights,” he was quoted as saying by the portal, referring to the calculations he carried out by mapping results of polling districts from GE13 with the proposed redrawing of electoral boundaries.
He added that his research also showed that BN could win seven state constituencies in Selangor that were currently held by the Federal opposition, while another six seats previously considered as safe for the opposition will now become marginal.
“Another two state seats, which are closely contested, will become even more marginal”, he said, according to MMO.
Ong had also named some of the state seats that could be taken over by BN in GE14 – namely, Ijok, Selat Kelang, Pelabuhan Klang, Sementa, Sijangkang, and Morib.
In GE13, PKR, DAP and PAS, under the former Federal opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat, improved their hold on Selangor winning 44 seats, giving them a two-third majority in the 56-seat state legislative assembly,
The proposed redelineation of Federal and state constituencies by the EC has come under fire from NGOs, social activists and opposition parties as well as BN component members, especially MCA and Gerakan.
Most of these groups have accused the EC of blatant gerrymandering and malapportionment in the distribution of voters, allegedly to suit Umno’s agenda.
