Tan Sri Annuar Musa today said that activities of the so-called "Red Shirt" protesters should not be associated to Umno.
"It is not right to say, 'of course they are Umno'. What they do is their own individual thing," said the party information chief during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre.
"The red shirts were never discussed in Umno supreme council meetings and we cannot stop any individual from voicing their opinions.
"Also, if Umno were to take the streets, we will not bring 20,000 or 30,000 – we will bring 100,000 people, that is the power of Umno," he said.
He added that the "Red Shirt" protesters led by Jamal Yunos, the Umno Sungai Besar chief, had the same rights to protest as those who participate in Bersih rallies.
"If they wear a red shirt, it does not mean they cannot say what they want. They have their right to state their opinions too," he said.
Annuar was quick to add that Umno does not condone any unlawful act, especially violence.
"Let the people speak their mind. If they do wrong, they will be punished.
"The same applies to Bersih protesters," he said.
The Bersih 5 rally is expected to take place on Nov 19, and the red shirt group have planned a rally at the same time to "counter" the protest.
