MCA spokesperson Ti Lian Ker today hit back at Muhyiddin Yassin, saying it was the former Deputy Umno President and not Prime Minister Najib Razak who was to blame for the violence being exerted by the Red Shirts movement.

In a statement, Ti argued that Muhyddin, who is now the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president also indirectly had a hand in the movement headed by Umno Sungai Besar Division Chief Jamal Yunos.

This was because the antics of the Red Shirts were a reflection of the ideologies espoused by Muhyiddin, former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he said.

“In fact Muhyiddin had directly and indirectly contributed to the growth of this culture by declaring ‘I am Malay first, Malaysian second’ followed by Mahathir’s endorsement of the other extreme right wing, Perkasa, of which he is their patron.”

Ti argued that what Muhyiddin claimed earlier went against the 1Malaysia concept that Najib promotes at present.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin claimed that Najib, who is also the Umno president, was giving tacit support to the Red Shirts movement by refraining from taking it to task over its actions.

The group recently made headlines after some of its members assaulted Bersih 2.0 supporters as well as members of the press.

Ti, who is MCA’s religious harmony bureau chairman, however questioned Muhyiddin’s sudden decision to speak out against the “culture of mob violence.”

“Why did you not speak out against it when you were still in Umno? Why did you have to wait until you became part of the Opposition? Are you implying such things were OK when you were part of the party (Umno)?”

The former three-term Pahang assemblyman also said he was surprised by Muhyiddin’s tactic of trying to pin the blame for “the rude and uncouth” actions of the Red Shirts solely on Najib.

Ti said he found it ironic that Muhyiddin had chosen to criticise Najib when the actions of some Umno members were inspired by Mahathir’s rhetorics in the past.

“I think Muhyiddin should also blame Mahathir for this.”
