Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has hinted that he will take part in the Bersih 5 rally next month.

“I have gotten myself a yellow shirt.

“I will attend because Bersih is peaceful,” he said, alluding to the colour associated with Bersih 2.0.

Mahathir said this at a ceramah last night in Shah Alam.

The electoral reform group will hold the rally to call for institutional reforms as well as for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation on Nov 19.

Malaysia’s longest-serving premier went on to praise Bersih 2.0 supporters for being disciplined despite being provoked by the Red Shirts movement.

Red Shirts members recently made headlines for harassing and assaulting Bersih 2.0 followers.

Mahathir, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, then urged party members to don yellow shirts instead of red ones during the Bersih 5 rally.

“Let us come out in droves, together with PKR, DAP and Amanah.”

If Mahathir keeps to his word and makes an appearance at next month’s rally, it will mark the second time he has done so.

The elderly statesman made a surprise appearance at the Bersih 4 rally last year where he was accompanied by his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

Mahathir’s detractors had previously noted that the nonagenarian had in 2015 said that street rallies were not the way to get what was desired and that this should be seen as a last resort.
