Muhyiddin Yassin paid a surprise visit to the High Court here today, to offer “moral support” to former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was in court to settle a suit against Utusan Melayu Bhd.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) President explained that he had not seen Anwar for a long time, hence his decision to come to court today.
“He is the de-facto leader of PKR, so I feel it is important that as a president of a party, there needs to be some form of relationship for better cooperation to challenge the Barisan Nasional,” Muhyiddin told the media after leaving the court room.
Anwar had attended court to settle a lawsuit against the publisher of Malay daily, Utusan Malaysia, and its managing editor over reports on his alleged role in the 2013 Lahad Datu intrusion.
Muhyiddin’s visit comes exactly one month after former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also paid a visit to Anwar at a separate High Court hearing on an urgent application by his former nemesis to suspend the controversial National Security Council Act from coming into force.
Mahathir was seen shaking hands with Anwar and briefly exchanging pleasantries. It was the first time they met after an 18-year lapse, following Anwar’s sacking as deputy prime minister.
Meanwhile, Anwar told reporters it was good of Muhyiddin to come to court especially to see him.
“We will raise the cooperation levels between the opposition parties. I will ask PKR and our Pakatan Harapan allies to initiate talks with him,” Anwar said, when asked on what the main points of their discussion were.
He added that he did not see any problem in Muhyiddin also talking with PAS.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison term for sodomy.
Last month, Muhyiddin was quoted as saying that his party would work with Pakatan Harapan – which comprises DAP, PKR and Amanah – to secure Anwar’s release should the opposition succeed in ousting BN from Putrajaya.
The former Deputy Prime Minister’s visit to Anwar also comes days after he met PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
