A Malaysian national has been extradited from New South Wales to Western Australia to face charges relating to a sexual assault that happened 20 years ago.

Acting on information from WA Police, Australian Federal Police officers arrested the 49-year-old man at Sydney Airport on Thursday night after he flew in from Malaysia.

The man is wanted in Perth over an incident in Scarborough in March 1996.

It is alleged he broke into a villa and committed several offences against a 38-year-old woman.

He is facing six counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent, as well as deprivation of liberty, burglary and unlawful wounding charges.

The man arrived at the Perth Domestic Airport on a Qantas flight from Sydney on Friday afternoon.

Acting Superintendent Peter Branchi from the State Crime Operations Division said a review began into the case late last year.

"These charges come about as a result of the latest advancements in technology," he said.

There were two sex attacks that occurred in Scarborough on the same night in 1996, one was in Dover Street the other in Lalor Street.

"We look at everything but at this point in time we have the evidence to charge this man in relation to Dover," Acting Superintendent Branchi said.

He said inquiries were continuing into the other attack.

Acting Superintendent Branchi said it was a good result for police and for the victim.

"The victim has been made aware of the results today and yesterday and is very pleased with the outcome," he said.

Police said the man was living in Scarborough at the time and studying a course in the aviation industry.

He is expected to appear in a Perth court on Saturday morning.
