The prime minister is an extraordinary man who is able to remain calm and collected even during times of trouble or danger, says deputy PM.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak is an extraordinary man, blessed by God with patience which had helped him persevere in spite of all the challenges thrown his way, says his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking at the launch of a coffee table book, titled “Najib Razak 40 Years 40 Pictures”, Zahid said in their 30 years of friendship, he noticed that Najib had patience unlike that seen in others.

He recalled his early experiences working with Najib as his political secretary, citing a 1997 incident where three Umno Youth Exco members were arrested under the now abolished Internal Security Act (ISA).

“Najib, who was the Youth chief at the time, was stressed out over the arrests. The Special Branch officers came to his house and threatened to nab him as well.

“He didn’t run because he knew as the Youth chief he had to be with his men. I noticed how patient he was and that was a great quality in a leader.”

Zahid also recited another incident when Najib’s then driver applied the emergency brakes while driving over 200kph, startling the sleeping Umno President.

Zahid said Najib merely asked what had happened and once the driver gave his reason, he kept quiet and closed his eyes without showing any sign of anger.

These incidents strengthened his belief that the Pekan MP was an extraordinary man who was able to remain calm and collected even in times of trouble.

According to the Bagan Datoh MP, Najib’s great qualities also included his reluctance to entertain negative talk against any individual.

“Even though we received a lot of reports against a certain individual, he (Najib) would never entertain them or comment more on the negative aspects of the person. This is a contrast to some of us who would have passed our judgement on the person.”

On the special edition book on Najib, Zahid pledged to buy 500 copies for all his employees at the Home Ministry.

“I won’t use government money. I’ll use my own money. I will buy 500 books for the KDN (Home Ministry) staff,” said Zahid, who is also Home Minister.
