Instead of cheering for their favourite football club, Kedah fans last night were heard singing a "Kami nak Najib undur" (We want Najib to step down) during the match against Terengganu.
The 1 minute 21 seconds clip was posted on Kelab Che Det's Facebook page today. It showed the fans, singing in a chorus and dancing inside the Darul Aman stadium, as they celebrated Kedah's 1-0 win against Terengganu in the Malaysia Super League match.
The fan page for former prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had claimed the protest song was clearly heard inside the stadium.
It was believed the fans were expressing their unhappiness with the sudden ouster of Dr Mahathir's son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir from the menteri besar post recently.
Mukhriz was replaced by Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah after an impasse that lasted almost two weeks.
He had resigned on February 3 after Ahmad Bashah led Kedah Umno leaders to declare lost of confidence in Mukhriz on January 20.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as Umno president, was asked to intervene and choose the successor to the menteri besar post after meeting with a majority of the Kedah Umno leadership.
The clip has since garnered more than 40,000 views and 700 shares on Facebook since it was uploaded about 11am today. – February 17, 2016.
