A group of Umno division chiefs say they will go as far as burning the party's constitution over their unhappiness with the party leadership's decision not to act against Kedah party chiefs who called for the ouster of state menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
Deputy president of the Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM) Datuk Mohd Zin Mustapa said if the party did not change its no-action stance, the group would proceed to hold a protest.
Zin said they were upset over the rejection of the group's memorandum that was submitted to the party headquarters yesterday.
GKCM had urged the Umno leadership to be consistent in its actions, by punishing the Kedah chiefs who wanted Mukhriz out, just as it had punished the nine GKCM members who held a press conference calling for party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation.
Yesterday, Bernama reported party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor as saying that the chiefs calling for Mukhriz's removal will not face any disciplinary action.
"We are waiting for a response, whether what we have asked for is appropriate action.
"If we don't see further action, we will look at various moves until we are satisfied. We may even hold a big demonstration to burn the Umno constitution.
"The offence is the same. If the constitution cannot be applied, it's better that we burn it," Zin told reporters at the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said GKCM was asking for the same actions taken against its members for criticising Najib to be applied to those who wanted Mukhriz out.
"I also wish to see the leader of that group sacked. Their actions show no respect to the Sultan of Kedah.
"Is the Umno leadership playing favourites," Zin asked.
GKCM yesterday said Umno should not have double-standards in deciding who should be punished for actions that contravened the party's constitution.
The rebel group had last year called for Najib's resignation and have embarked on a roadshow around the country to continue to press for his ouster.
Nine branch chiefs have been punished by having their voting rights stripped.
Tengku Adnan, in dismissing calls for disciplinary action against the Kedah Umno leaders yesterday, said they had done nothing wrong as they had only asked Najib as the party president and prime minister to intervene in the leadership crisis involving Mukhriz.
