TAIPING: A member of the “Mamak Gang” was shot dead and two others were detained by police at the Changkat Jering toll plaza yesterday hours after a robbery in Rasah, Negeri Sembilan.
The suspects refused to obey police orders to stop and deliberately rammed several police cars. Police opened fire, hitting one of them, a 38-year-old man in the ribs.
Perak police chief Osman Salleh said a team from D9, the Serious Crime Branch, and the CID officers from Taiping police came across all the suspects in a Volkswagen Passat car at the toll plaza.
All three were from Perak, he said. The other two men in the car, aged 31 and 33, were detained.
Osman said a BMW car, believed to be carrying the suspects’ colleagues, arrived at the scene and attempted to knock down the police car before escaping. Three police cars were damaged.
The BMW was later found abandoned at Km 237 on the south-bound lane of the North-South Highway. A semi-automatic Beretta pistol, police vests, 20 sets of number plates, a pair of handcuffs and two walkie-talkies were found in the car, he said.
The Volkswagen was believed to be stolen last year from Bukit Raja, Klang, in Selangor. Police found RM2,400 in cash and several other items including vehicle number plates, parang and caps bearing the police emblem.
“Police believe that they have busted the Mamak Gang involved in various crimes such as robbery, breaking into and stealing luxury vehicles in several states. Up to January, the gang had committed 25 crimes in Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan involving losses estimated at RM2.4 million,” he said.– BERNAMA
