PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has slammed Umno for not providing a legitimate reason to replace Mukhriz Mahathir as Kedah Menteri Besar.
“Any decision to dismiss the current Menteri Besar must be based on a reasonable excuse,” the PKR president said in a statement.
The Permatang Pauh lawmaker claimed the current political crisis in Kedah was, in fact, caused by unrest in Umno, rather than Mukhriz’s failure in administering the state.
Wan Azizah said Mukhriz should remain as Menteri Besar due to the “absence of compelling justifiable reasons”.
“Our view is to maintain and support the status quo.”
In echoing similar sentiments, Lunas assemblyman Dr Azman Nasruddin said Mukhriz should be given the opportunity to govern Kedah.
Bukit Selambau assemblyman Dr Krishnamoorthy Rajannaidu said the PKR representatives in the state “unanimously agreed” with the PKR Supreme Council’s decision on the matter.
The Star reported that Opposition leaders in Kedah were demanding a state assembly sitting to resolve the current Menteri Besar crisis.
The assemblymen, according to the English daily, stressed that when it came to the top position in the state, it must be determined by the state assembly.
Meanwhile, Mukhriz denied reports in the media and pro-government blogs that he had been asked to resign – by signing a letter – from his post by the Kedah Council of Regency.
The former deputy minister had on Facebook this afternoon labelled the reports as “lies” and denied claims that he was unwilling to sign the letter and that he was asked twice to sign the letter.
