It also reaches out to 510 students at UniKL having difficulty continuing studies, offering them free food and “work study scheme” on campus.
PETALING JAYA: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has confirmed that it will provide scholarships to the tune of RM238 million to 10,583 students under the Mara Educational Institute (IPMa).
Of this, 9,180 are full scholarships totalling RM214 million.
In a statement today, the education body said it had processed 1,940 offer letters to students for its June/July/September 2015 intakes which will be sent out by the end of February.
Processing and approval for its January 2016 intake is ongoing and will be completed by March 2016. On reports that some students had halted or postponed their studies due to financial hardship, Mara-owned Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) has contacted all 510 students and a substantial number have agreed to continue their studies and return to campus beginning today.
UniKL also announced a RM250 financial assistance as well as a “Work Study Scheme” for students from low-income families to enable them to work on campus.
The university also set up a “Food for Love” programme to distribute free food to its students and will allocate funds drawn from its UniKL Alumni.
Mara has come under fire in recent weeks from Opposition MP Rafizi Ramli who questioned the ability of Mara to sponsor the studies of its students after many were left in the lurch with no word about their academic future.
