SUBANG JAYA: Outgoing Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir said he would continue to speak up on issues which were important to Umno.
Asked if he would join his father and former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in calling for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ouster, Mukhriz said:
“At the moment, I will speak up on matters which are important to Umno,
“If the top leadership commits wrongs, then these must be exposed and we must speak up on these issues to strengthen the party.”
The general feeling within the party is that Umno’s chances of winning the next general election are bleak if there is no change in the party’s top leadership, Mukhriz said upon arriving at the Subang airport this afternoon.
He added that since he no longer held any position in the government, he was free to say what he wanted. The youngest son of Dr Mahathir was greeted by about 50 supporters who chanted “Long Live Mukhriz, Long Live Datuk Seri!” after arriving from Alor Setar.
Mukhriz had announced his resignation at Wisma Darulaman in Kedah earlier today.
Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah will be sworn in as the new Menteri Besar in Alor Setar tomorrow morning.
The announcement came weeks after 14 Kedah Umno chiefs, led by Ahmad Bashah, held a press conference urging Najib to remove Mukhriz as Menteri Besar and state Umno chief, claiming they had lost all confidence in his leadership.
