A Malaysian national has appeared in a Perth court charged over a sexual assault from two decades ago after being extradited from New South Wales.

Alfred Gerard Eravelly made a brief appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with historical sex offences.

Eravelly appeared dishevelled in court, wearing a black polo shirt.

Police allege Eravelly, 49, broke into a villa in the beach suburb of Scarborough in March 1996 and assaulted a 38-year-old woman

He is facing six counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent, as well as deprivation of liberty, burglary and unlawful wounding charges.

A duty lawyer applied for a one-week adjournment for legal advice.

Eravelly did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to face court again via video link from prison on February 22.

Acting on information from WA Police, Australian Federal Police officers arrested Eravelly at Sydney Airport on Thursday night after he flew in from Malaysia.

He was flown to Perth from Sydney on Friday afternoon.

Police allege Eravelly was living in Scarborough at the time of the 1996 assault and was studying a course in the aviation industry.

Photos of Eravelly on Facebook show him working as a pilot.

Eravelly's wife was at the Perth Magistrates Court with several suitcases but declined to comment.

"I have nothing to say," she said.
