The Selangor chapter of the Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representative (Mubarak) today expressed its willingness to be a mediator to resolve differences between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Selangor Mubarak president Abu Hassan Omar said the protracted disagreement between Najib and Dr Mahathir should be resolved through negotiations for the sake of all parties.
He said the move to become a mediator was mooted after a special meeting held with 12 non-governmental organisations in Selangor today regarding the current political turmoil in the country.
Abu Hassan also regretted the action taken by Dr Mahathir and several UMNO former leaders who were willing to be in cahoots with the opposition, describing it as being disrespectful of the party's principles.
"We are willing to be the mediator because we view it as the best move to quickly solve the standoff between the two sides for the benefit of all parties.
"We truly regret Dr Mahathir's action when they (the opposition) had previously made various allegations against the statesman," the former cabinet minister and former Selangor menteri besar told reporters here today.
He said Dr Mahathir's action to cooperate with the opposition in making a declaration to oust Najib was clearly contrary to his respectable position as former prime minister and great statesman who mooted the Vision 2020.
Abu Hassan said Selangor Mubarak and the Selangor NGO Consultative Council also expressed their strong support to the leadership of Najib as prime minister and UMNO president.
Last Friday, the former prime minister led a group of over 50 people in signing the Citizens’ Declaration calling for the removal of Najib as prime minister.
The group included former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir, former MCA president, Ling Liong Sik, Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
