KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah called on lawmakers in Parliament to cease their politicking and slandering.
In his opening address at the first Parliament session of the year, the King said members of Parliament should instead appreciate the differing views expressed by politicians across the divide and cease from resorting to slander in an attempt to bring each other down as it would have negative repercussions on the nation.
“I call upon all the honourable members to unite and love this country,” he said, requesting for their loyalty, and for them to make it a priority to defend and protect the nation.
“Differing views are normal in a parliamentary democracy, but this should be celebrated, not used to foster hatred among each other, which can in the end, result in the nation’s downfall.”
The King said MPs should set a good example to the people by working with one another to come up with ideas and views that would ensure the country remained harmonious and continued to prosper.

He also reminded the public to avoid abusing social media be spreading racist sentiments and urged the government to take action against those who attempted to stir racial hatred online.
