KUALA LUMPUR: PAS wants Prime Minister Najib Razak out, but unlike the signatories to the Citizens’ Declaration, the party wishes to do so through a “democratic channel”.

PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan said the Islamist party, although having refused to participate in the declaration tabled by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad last week, definitely supported the call to have Najib removed.

“We want the leadership and the country’s whole system to be changed because we are one of the opposition parties. That’s very clear.

“We don’t necessarily have to wait for the elections, but we believe in the parliamentary democracy process. There are proper steps to do it, (ousting Najib) like through the motion of no confidence.

“If there is a motion, we will support it,” he told reporters when met outside the Dewan Rakyat lobby here today.

Takiyuddin also cited lack of knowledge over the declaration’s real aim for PAS’ decision not to partake in the movement.

“I’m not saying there is anything wrong with them, just because we are not participating doesn’t mean we are not with them.”

He also dismissed any possibility of PAS ever working with its long-time nemesis Dr Mahathir.

The Citizens’ Declaration was signed on Friday by 58 signatories, including suspended Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin, Mahathir’s son and former Kedah MB Mukhriz Mahathir, as well as other opposition leaders, and civil society organisations, including Bersih.
