Shafie Apdal says 24,000 lost jobs from April to December 2015 and the government must address this issue.

KUALA LUMPUR: With more Malaysians becoming jobless, former Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal has urged Putrajaya to come up with a plan to address the problem.

Citing a report by the Malaysian Statistics Department, Shafie said the unemployment rate had gone up from 3% to 3.3% from December 2014 to December 2015.

He said 24,000 people lost their jobs from April to December 2015.

“This is not including the 6,000 Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) employees who were asked to go.

“The government needs to address this issue in both rural and city areas.

“There must be a plan as we already know certain companies are facing problems,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Shafie said the number who lost their jobs had increased by 22% from September 2014 to September 2015.

The Semporna MP also pointed out that last week almost 1,000 Petronas workers were let go.

“These workers have families to take care of and children who are still studying.”
