He says police 'have been looking for me' and expects Mat Sabu and him to face charges about comments on royal address.
PETALING JAYA: The DAP’s parliamentary leader, Lim Kit Siang, has confirmed that police were seeking to take a statement from him about comments he had made about the Royal Address to Parliament this month.
In a press interview, Lim said the police “have been looking for me” and that he would meet them soon, most likely in the next few days.
He also said he expected to be charged by the police, but gave no basis for his conclusion.
Lim told Malay Mail Online today: “They tried to contact me, and then they issued an order for me to appear before them so I told my lawyer to arrange it. It’ll be this coming week, in the next few days,”
In a speech on Saturday night, he had spoken about expecting to be arrested. Lim had not been available to FMT earlier today for comments about the remark, but the DAP’s legal bureau secretary, Gobind Singh Deo, told FMT Lim had been called up for a statement “but the reasons remain unclear”. He said Lim would “most likely” be giving his statement next week.
Several police reports were lodged on March 8 against Lim; Mohamad Sabu of Parti Amanah Negara; and Malaysiakini about a Malaysiakini news report quoting their remarks about the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal address at the opening of Parliament.
An activist alleged that comments by Lim and Mohamad, quoted by Malaysiakini, had insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Lim had said the speech had been prepared by the government and did not reflect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s personal views.
Malay Mail Online quoted him today as saying that Mohamad Sabu would probably be questioned on the same matter.
“Mat Sabu and myself will be charged within the next few days, I think,” he said. He did not say how he arrived at that conclusion.
On Saturday night, he had said his arrest would be made as part of new government actions against dissent but gave no further details.
